Aurora One is the songwriting moniker of artist, rapper, and soundtrack composer Mel Lamagna, based in Jersey City, NJ. Wielding a dark, brooding, romantic, bittersweet R&B sound lined with lo-fi influences, vivid imagery, and a flair for the mystical, he sheds light on the beauty within the flaws of life and love, and seeks meaning in the pain of heartache and letting go.
Classically trained in piano from the age of seven, Mel began writing music in high school as soundtracks to short films. With the debut of Aurora One, his sound evolved into a deep, otherworldly melancholy with vibrant melodies and a chillhop flavor. Influenced by hip-hop and lo-fi composers the likes of Nujabes and Idealism, and occasionally sporting hypnotic rap flows inspired by that of Eminem and RA Scion of Common Market, Mel bridges these genres through Aurora One to tell his story, whether it be through writing for featured artists or performing verses himself.
Aurora One's new single, “Memory”, bilingually tells the story of a love never found and a friendship long since forgotten—with the help of a featured artist with a golden voice, Angelo Ibasco (And Other Things). As a nod to their common Philippine heritage, the song’s latter half was written purely in Tagalog.
“Memory” releases on all digital streaming platforms in August 2020.
